Volunteer at SAFE at Hwy 87! 

It takes just 5 simple steps to serve as a volunteer at SAFE at Hwy 87 and give back to our community in a meaningful way. Scroll down to see a more detailed list of all of our volunteer opportunities. 

Step 1: Download and read our Volunteer Agreement. (You will sign the volunteer agreement electronically in Step 2.)

Step 2: Create an account in Civic Champs to fill out a volunteer application and sign the volunteer agreement.

Step 3: Fill out the Background Check Application. Please note all volunteers are required to have a background check. It takes 1-2 days to receive the background check results. Once the results are sent to us, then we'll approve the volunteer application. (Note: you will be able to access the volunteer opportunities calendar in Civic Champs once your volunteer application is approved. You will receive an email to let you know it's been approved.)

Step 4: Attend a new volunteer orientation on a Monday at 10 am at SAFE at Hwy 87. Contact our Volunteer Manager at administration@safealamance.org to sign-up.

Step 5: After you have attended the new volunteer orientation, sign-up for current volunteer opportunities through Civic Champs!

Volunteer Opportunities at Hwy 87

Food Distribution​

 

Food Shopping Assistants

9am - 12 noon Tuesday or Thursday, 9am - 11am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

If you enjoy being friendly and helpful to our neighbors, this volunteer role might be for you. You will assist a neighbor in going around the pantry helping them choose their food items, answer questions and navigate the space. This role will also be beneficial when a neighbor is shopping for more than one family. Spanish skills are helpful, but not required.

 

Baggers

9am - 12 noon Tuesday or Thursday, 9am - 11am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

This volunteer will assist at the check-out by bagging the neighbor’s groceries and packing them in a wagon.

Sorters & Stockers

9am - 12 noon Tuesday or Thursday, 9am - 11am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

Sort & stock donations. Must be comfortable lifting 20+ pounds

 

Check-out

9am - 12 noon Tuesday or Thursday, 9am - 11am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

This volunteer role will help neighbors check out from the pantry. This volunteer will count the items the neighbor is “purchasing” to make sure they haven’t exceeded their limit, assist in bagging the items.

 

Car Loaders

9:00am - 12 noon Tuesday or Thursday, 9am - 11am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

The volunteer will take the carts full of groceries out the front door to the waiting neighbor’s car in the parking lot in a wagon and if needed, help load the food into their car. The volunteer will be responsible for keeping track of wagons and ensuring their return. Because you will be both inside and outside for this shift, please dress accordingly. Please be aware that this is a physical shift that will often require you to lift and load 25+ pound boxes.

Parking Lot Attendants

8:45am - 11:45am Tuesday or Thursday, 8:45am - 10:45am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

This volunteer position will check neighbor’s appointments as they arrive in the parking lot and direct them where to park. This position will also direct neighbors out of the parking lot if they have arrived too early, as we have a small parking lot and waiting in cars for their appointments is not an option.

 

Spanish Interpreters

9:00am - 12 noon Tuesday or Thursday, 9am - 11am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

The volunteer will assist with Spanish interpreting to facilitate communication with our Spanish speaking neighbors.

Intake & Referrals

 

Community Connectors (Door)

9am - 12 noon Tuesday or Thursday, 9am - 11am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

Greet neighbors as they arrive for their appointment. Confirm their appointment time and invite neighbors in based on intake station availability and building occupancy limits. Offer seats and bottled water while neighbors wait for their appointment. 

 

Community Workers (Intake)

9am - 12 noon Tuesday or Thursday, 9am - 11am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

Meet with neighbors when they come into the pantry, confirm their demographic information and enter changes into our system. Ask neighbors questions on the intake form and, if needed, enter it into our database to help connect them with the resources they need. Schedule an appointment for the neighbor to return in 2 weeks. This position requires additional training from the SAFE staff. We also ask that people in this volunteer position commit to two weeks a month to help build relationships with our neighbors. 

Community Resource Referrals

9am - 12 noon Tuesday or Thursday, 9am - 11am 1st & 3rd Saturdays

Help empower our neighbors by connecting them with other resources in our local community.​

This position requires additional training from the SAFE staff. We also ask that people in this volunteer position commit to every two weeks on the same day of the week to help build relationships with our neighbors.
