Solving School Lunch Debt
In Alamance County, school lunch costs $3.10 a day. For families who don’t qualify for free or reduced meals, that expense adds up quickly. Although no student is denied a meal due to inability to pay, unpaid balances accumulate over time. That lunch debt eventually comes due, creating stress and hardship for families already working hard to make ends meet.
SAFE is partnering with the United Way of Alamance County and All for Lunch to eliminate existing student lunch debt and prevent it from growing in the future.
As of January 31, 2026, ABSS schools had $21,400 in outstanding lunch debt. Thanks to a generous donation secured by the United Way from McKay’s of Mebane, the debt at 11 schools has already been paid in full, with significant relief provided to another school. All for Lunch has committed to covering the remaining balance of the current debt.
But about $3,500 in new debt accumulates each month.
We’re building a reserve fund to ensure no family has to worry about the cost of lunch.
